What Dr. Jenkins Likes Most About Being a Dentist

Dr. JenkinsWhat made you decide to become a dentist, and how old were you?

I was in third grade when I first became interested in being a dentist. After multiple visits to my orthodontist, Dr. Steffen, I really thought it was cool. In high school, I had an assignment to research a possible future career and write a paper. I choose dentistry, and that really helped me pinpoint that it was the career for me!

How long have you been practicing?

I graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in 2008 with Dr. Spurlock. I have been practicing for a little over 7 years. During that time, I have had the opportunities to work with children, in public health, and in private practice.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in dentistry?

Dentistry is a great career. I would advise someone to make sure that he/she is the type of person who truly loves to learn. Dentistry is constantly evolving, and, in order to be excellent, a person must be committed to continuous learning. Anyone

wanting a dental career should make contacts with as many dental professionals as possible and ask questions!

What do you find most satisfying about being a dentist?

I love that my career allows me to provide treatment to patients that makes an impact on the quality of their lives. I enjoy being part of a team that is committed to serving our patients to the best of our abilities. I also enjoy being involved in the dental community and trying to make our profession better for everyone.

A Dentist Visit You Will Actually Enjoy!

At Dental Design studio, we strive to make dentist visits as enjoyable as possible. Turns out, our patients think going to the dentist can actually be a great experience, and they graciously let us know in their reviews.

Patients as Friends

Dr. Spurlock and Dr. Whiteneck see patients as much more than just patients, but as friends – and we only want the best for you and your oral health!

This came through for a patient at a recent visit. “My appointments are like visits with old friends,” Bob wrote in his review.

Larutha commented, “From the front desk to the dental chair, I felt welcomed. The ladies in the office treat you as family. They come up with a plan that is best for your oral health but is fair to your wallet. Though it is “weird” to say that I enjoyed myself, I truly did. I’m looking forward to a continued relationship.

Gail feels that going to Dental Design Studio is “like going to a friend, thorough and gentle. They’re very concerned with making you comfortable.

Relaxed and Fun Atmosphere

The welcome feeling comes from our philosophy of caring for patients in a relaxed and fun atmosphere, treating each patient with individualized attention. We strive to make the entire experience one where you feel comfortable.

The staff is always very helpful and friendly from the moment you walk in the door. More importantly, the doctors, the hygienists, and assistants are wonderful! Going to the Dentist is a pleasant experience for us,” Melissa commented after her last visit.

Ann wrote in her review, “I’m always relaxed when I come in because of the wonderful care provided by all of the very professional staff, as well as the exceptional dentists themselves!

Diana commented, “Totally takes the stress out of going to the dentist!

A Dentist You Actually Enjoy Visiting

Our dentists both believe that a trip to the dentist should be personalized, comfortable, and as fun as possible. Although not many people look forward to the dentist, our patients have a different experience.

If a dentist visit can be described as enjoyable, this was it,” Charles commented.

Danielle had similar sentiment about her visit. “Everyone here is so beyond kind and they are so accommodating! They go above and beyond to treat you right. The dentist isn’t the most fun place to visit, but they make you enjoy your time here.

The care our patients receive keeps them coming back. Chesney has been coming to see Dr. Whiteneck for 20 years. “I actually drive 45 minutes for my appointments. I could find a Dentist closer, but I trust they will do the best for my teeth. They are a very friendly group. A lot a people hate going to the Dentist, but I love going to mine. They keep up with the latest technology in dentistry and their office is very clean and comfortable.

Latest Technology

We are dedicated to staying at the forefront of continuing education and the latest dental care techniques, to create healthy and happy smiles.

The staff at DDS is top notch and the technology is state of the art. The whole process is so efficient. My hygienist is so friendly, careful and experienced. I was in and out with x-rays, cancer screening, cleaning, polishing, fluoride and visit with the doctor in 50 minutes,” Greg shared about his last visit.

Cathleen was also impressed with the gentle touch. “Best dental experience I’ve ever had. The doctors, assistants & staff are all very friendly and caring. They helped me get my dental health on track with little pain and great expertise.

Take it directly from our patients: going to the dentist can be a pleasant experience with great results!

Jackie Gray was a hostess at El Chico Sooner Fashion Mall. She chose El Chico so she could get 50% off the food!

Suzanne Leeviraphan worked at “Old-Fashioned” Ice Cream Bar Store at Sooner Fashion Mall. Her friend’s parents owned it, so she was working with all her best friends!

Allie Kennedy was an assistant in the 2-year old room at Creative Kids Day Care. “I got to take care of some of our patients before I worked here ☺ This is only my second job (but it’ll be five years in August)!

Kim Milliron was no slacker! At 10-years old when she started helping at her family country store and gas station where she had to make change and clean out the snake pit. The snake pit was a tourist attraction off highway 64 in Northern OK. Then at 12, she started working at a dress shop in Freedom, OK.

Dr. Sara Spurlock was lifeguard at Cleveland City (the small town not Cleveland County) pool. “I believe it was the only round pool with the deep end in the middle in the entire state. You had to swim out to the diving boards. It was difficult to guard, but lots of fun.” Sadly, the pool is no longer in operation.

What Dr. Spurlock Loves Most About Being A Dentist in Norman

Dr. Spurlock is a dentist in Norman, Oklahoma

WE RECENTLY ASKED DR. Spurlock a few questions about her career as a dentist in Norman, Oklahoma. Here are her answers – thought you’d find them interesting!

How old were you, and what made you decide you wanted to become a dentist?

“I knew from a very young age that I loved science, reading, art & making people smile. From my first visit to the dentist when I was three, to looking over my uncle’s shoulder assisting a patient, I have been intrigued with dentistry. I considered many professions; doctor, journalist, teacher and dentist, but it wasn’t until college that my interests in dentistry were solidified. I spent many hours observing in the dental offices of my cousins and I realized that with dentistry I could continue my life-long quest of education, in addition to furthering my enjoyment of reading, science, art and making others smile.”

Where did you attend school and how long have you been practicing?

“I attended dental school at the University of Oklahoma College of dentistry in OKC. I am in my seventh year of practice, but after being around dentistry for so many years prior to entering private practice it seems like much longer!”

What advice would you give to a young person considering a career in Dentistry?

“Learn as much as you can, observe, listen to others in practice, & find out how they balance their lives and career and stay energized and passionate about the profession and go for it.”

What is one thing you find most satisfying about being a dentist?

“The most satisfying aspect of my profession is building relationships with patients, getting to be a small part of their lives, learning about their travels, life events, sharing recipes, books, movies and music they enjoy and watching children grow. Our profession offers a unique opportunity to connect with patients and their families over a lifetime while maintaining their healthy smiles.”

We hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know Dr. Spurlock better! And, as always, THANKS for being our valued patients and friends!

What Dr. Whiteneck Loves Most About Being A Dentist in Norman, Oklahoma

Dr. Whiteneck is a dentist in Norman, Oklahoma

WE RECENTLY ASKED DR. Whiteneck a few questions about her career as a dentist in Norman, Oklahoma. Here are her answers – thought you’d find them interesting!

How old were you, and what made you decide you wanted to become a dentist?

“My father was a general practice medical doctor in Woodward for over three decades. As I child I remember going on house calls with my dad. I learned compassion, trust and respect for patients by observing his gentle, calm & caring manner. Later, as a teenager, I worked many summers in his office. He often worked twelve-hour days, between the hospital, the clinic & the house calls. When I started college, I planned to go into medicine. Yet, the memories of Dad’s long hours & his absence from many of us kids’ (me & my three older brothers) activities nagged me. In my senior year at Oklahoma State University, I switched from pre-med to pre-dent.”

Where did you attend school and how long have you been practicing?

“I started dental school in the fall of ’77. There were very few female dentists in Oklahoma & only one on the dental faculty at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry. There were seven (out of seventy-two) females in our class. In fact, when I started my practice in 1981 in my hometown of Woodward, I was the only female. Assuming this could be a problem in farm, ranch & oil field territory, my phone listing was S.E. Whiteneck, DDS– I was afraid to put Susan! But the times were changing, and being a female dental provider turned out to be (and has continued to be for over 30 years) a bonus! Many patients state that as one of their reasons for coming to our practice. Back in the ’80s, I never would have guessed!?!”

What advice would you give to a young person considering a career in Dentistry?

“We often have pre-dental students come observe in our office, and I always try to encourage them to go into dentistry. It is a great and continually advancing profession that never gets dull!”

What is one thing you find most satisfying about being a dentist?

“I have often said I picked dentistry for all the wrong reasons, a) I wanted to be my own boss, b) have control over my schedule, and c) have time for a family! In spite of these , dentistry has been such a wonderful & very fulfilling career! What a lucky person I am to love my profession so much! There can’t be many jobs better than dentistry! We get to help people with their oral health, their smiles, alleviate pain & discomfort. Another great perk is getting to be with our patients over the course of their lives, and getting to see their children & grandchildren grow up, too – it is such an honor.”

We hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know Dr. Whiteneck better! And, as always, THANKS for being our valued patients and friends!
