WE RECENTLY ASKED DR. Spurlock a few questions about her career as a dentist in Norman, Oklahoma. Here are her answers – thought you’d find them interesting!
How old were you, and what made you decide you wanted to become a dentist?
“I knew from a very young age that I loved science, reading, art & making people smile. From my first visit to the dentist when I was three, to looking over my uncle’s shoulder assisting a patient, I have been intrigued with dentistry. I considered many professions; doctor, journalist, teacher and dentist, but it wasn’t until college that my interests in dentistry were solidified. I spent many hours observing in the dental offices of my cousins and I realized that with dentistry I could continue my life-long quest of education, in addition to furthering my enjoyment of reading, science, art and making others smile.”
Where did you attend school and how long have you been practicing?
“I attended dental school at the University of Oklahoma College of dentistry in OKC. I am in my seventh year of practice, but after being around dentistry for so many years prior to entering private practice it seems like much longer!”
What advice would you give to a young person considering a career in Dentistry?
“Learn as much as you can, observe, listen to others in practice, & find out how they balance their lives and career and stay energized and passionate about the profession and go for it.”
What is one thing you find most satisfying about being a dentist?
“The most satisfying aspect of my profession is building relationships with patients, getting to be a small part of their lives, learning about their travels, life events, sharing recipes, books, movies and music they enjoy and watching children grow. Our profession offers a unique opportunity to connect with patients and their families over a lifetime while maintaining their healthy smiles.”
We hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know Dr. Spurlock better! And, as always, THANKS for being our valued patients and friends!
